Joining the Air Force in May?

For the past year, I have thought about joining the military, and recently decided the air force is my best route. My family and I have been wondering how safe it would be to join in May. Will we still be in South Korea, Afghanistan maybe? Also, how safe is the modern day air force compared to the army? I have heard many people say that the air force isn't nearly as dangerous as the army. They say the air force is a branch of military that operates in the background, is this true? How high is the injury and mortality rate for the air force? I would greatly appreciate if any airmen, or family of airmen could answer my questions about safety in the air force.
