Modern warfare 2, where does the knife come from?

I've always wondered, the character seems to get to it so fast, but it doesn't appear to be in his hands or anything. It kind of irritates me when I get knifed because it's almost like the knife materializes in his hand and then disappears after use. What gives? I have wondered this for the last 3 games.
