Punta Cana vs Santo Domingo?

I am looking to go visit the Dominican Republic soon, however, I am unsure as to which part to visit. I've narrowed it down to Punta Cana and Santo Domingo. I would love to have experiences such as those of the natives rather than a tourist as I am interested in learning more about the country and its citizens as well as helping my Spanish. All answers are greatly appreciated =D
