Blocking unknown calls?

I received a pre-recorded and unsolicited call on my cell phone the other day, from a company advertising to clean my carpets. I ended the call out of anger and wasn't able to get the company's name or the caller's number (since it was blocked) so I don't have a mode of recourse. The incident just made me wonder if there is a carrier or phone that allows me to block unknown callers because there has been a rash of these illicit calls just recently.
